The short version: SpeakKey is built so that we don’t see your data. Not your voice, not your transcripts, not your usage. The app has no account system, no analytics, and no servers of ours that your data passes through.
What SpeakKey collects
Nothing. SpeakKey does not collect, transmit, store, or sell any personal data. There is no account, no sign-in, no telemetry, no crash reporting to us, and no advertising identifiers.
How your voice is processed
- Audio never leaves your Mac. Your speech is transcribed locally, entirely on your Mac. SpeakKey does not record, retain, or upload audio.
- Transcripts are inserted, not kept. By default, the text of a dictation exists only long enough to be inserted into the field you’re typing in.
Optional AI cleanup
AI cleanup is off by default. When enabled, it runs on-device. Processing stays on your Mac, with no network involved.
You may optionally configure a cloud provider (Anthropic or OpenAI) using your own API key. If you do:
- Only the transcript text of a dictation is sent to the provider you chose, never audio, and never anything else on your screen.
- That data is handled under your agreement with that provider and their privacy policy, not ours.
- Your API key is stored only in your macOS login keychain. It is never synced, written to a file, or sent anywhere except to the provider you configured.
Dictation history
History is off by default. If you turn it on, past dictations are stored only on your Mac, never synced or uploaded. You control retention (keep the last N entries or auto-delete after N days) and can delete individual entries or everything at any time.
Permissions
SpeakKey requests two macOS permissions, used solely to function:
- Microphone, to hear you while you hold the trigger key.
- Accessibility, to insert text into the focused field of the app you’re using.
This website
speakkey.app is a static site. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics or tracking scripts. If you use the contact form, your name, email address, and message are delivered to us by a form-processing service and used only to respond to you.
Children
SpeakKey does not collect data from anyone, including children, and is not directed at children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. Because the app collects nothing, we expect changes to be rare and minor.
